The Principal Developer - API Services plays a key leadership role on critical software projects, while providing technical leadership to a talented team of software developers. Your primary responsibility is to design and develop API & web services running on PaaS container platform such as OpenShift and on Integration platform such as Fuse. The Principal Developer - API Services is responsible for the entire service lifecycle and owns all aspects of web services software development from design and development through to implementation and support. This role is responsible for working directly with global vendors and ensuring that standards and best practices are enforced to ensure stable, scalable, high performing services exists throughout all cross-system solutions.

Location note: This role is open to sit in either our Chicago, IL or our Knoxville, TN locations.

Essential Functions
  • Design and develop API & services solutions including SOAP and RESTful based web services using Microservices & Miniservices architecture, OpenShift, Fuse, ESB, Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Boot, Java, Git, GitHub, MongoDB, Oracle database and other key technologies.
  • Coach and mentor other team members as appropriate to facilitate their professional development.
  • Lead Service Lifecycle Governance activities including leading the council that ensures high quality design and development of all web services artifacts.
  • Collaborate with all global vendors to ensure web services standards and best practices are enforced, thereby ensuring stability, scalability, transparency and other key factors are optimized for all cross-system solutions.
  • Collaborate with end users and project team members on development of requirements and design of applications.
  • Perform a development lead role on projects as needed. Develop time estimates for project deliverables.
  • Maintain design and development standards and best practices (keeping these aligned with current industry trends), and ensure all software delivered aligns with such standards and best practices.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new ideas or tools for improved approaches to business problems.
  • Identify and communicate potential risks, issues and roadblocks to various stakeholders in a timely manner. Advise manager of these accordingly, and provide options, and contribute to the remediation of such items.
  • Perform and participate in peer design and code reviews and verify traceability back to the technical requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies, current issues, trends and tools affecting application development within the API & web services space.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new ideas or tools for improved approaches to business problems.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 7 years of development experience, working in a Unix environment, developing software using web services technologies (including Microservices & Miniservices architecture, OpenShift, Fuse, ESB, Docker, Kubernetes, XML, SOAP, REST, SQL, Spring Boot, Java, Git, GitHub, MongoDB) and the Oracle database.
  • 8+ years of experience working within an SDLC, designing, developing & testing various software applications.
  • Experience with Microservices design patterns and development
  • Experience with domain driven design and behavior driven development
  • Experience with JIRA and Agile development practices
  • Experience with API Gateway and Management platform such as 3scale is plus
  • Experience partnering with Development, QA, and other internal teams to review, inspect, document, and ensure the quality of software products being tested and eventually implemented.
  • Experience in several aspects of IT Service Management, including Change Management, Incident Management and Problem Management. Experience using tools supporting these efforts, including BMC Remedy.
  • Experience in developing and testing software, including supporting the QA team and helping to troubleshoot defects in order to arrive at the root cause (Root Cause Analysis). Experience using tools supporting these efforts, including SQL, SoapUI, and HP Quality Center.
  • In-depth knowledge of standard web technologies, including app servers, web servers, databases, browsers, etc.
  • Ability to work on parallel product releases, with multiple global QA and development teams.
  • Strong organizational skills including good time management, prioritizing tasks, estimating activities, and meeting deadlines. Must effectively prioritize own work, and the work of the team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and with a strong desire to learn and share information with others.
  • Able to coach/mentor other team members to facilitate their professional development.
  • Effective at building good working relationships with business partners and project team members in a Matrix organization.
  • Strong attention to detail, analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in the Telecommunications industry is preferred.
